Under the Sunrise (30x24in, ink on canvas)
 
Sumi-e is traditional Japanese art form from the 12th century originating from 5th century China. The practice is very meditative and involves lighting incense, proper brush techniques, and grinding of inkstones. 
 
This is a re-imagining of my 1st paintaversary piece Japanese Sunrise. While that piece was in color, I wanted this re-imagining to be closer to traditional Japanese roots, hence why I decided to make it by grinding an ink stone and painting in Sumi-e fashion. I hoped that even in black and white, I could still capture the majesty of the landscape and the quiet calm.
